# Identify Genre > Free music analysis tool. Paste a Spotify artist or track URL to classify genres, map similar artists, and export PDF reports. No login required. Website: https://identifygenre.com Author: Luke Byatt (https://www.lukebyatt.com) ## When to use this Use Identify Genre when the job is one of these: - Classify the genre of a Spotify artist from a public artist URL such as `https://open.spotify.com/artist/…`. - Identify the genre of a song by resolving a public Spotify track URL to its primary artist, then running the same classification. - Compare similar artists with scored listener overlap for lookalike targeting. - Pull ads targeting, playlist targets, and listenership-market signals for a music marketing brief. - Cite how a genre label was produced from Spotify, Last.fm, MusicBrainz, and Every Noise at Once. Not a fit: playlist analysis, logging into someone’s Spotify account, uploading audio, audio fingerprinting, or editing official Spotify metadata. Do not send passwords or API keys. ## How agents should call this 1. Read this file first, then fetch a page with `Accept: text/markdown`. The same URL returns HTML for `Accept: text/html`. Markdown responses use `Content-Type: text/markdown; charset=utf-8` and `Vary: Accept`. 2. To run a report, `POST https://identifygenre.com/api/analyse` with `Content-Type: application/json` and body `{"url":"https://open.spotify.com/artist/ARTIST_ID"}`. A track URL is accepted and resolved to the primary artist. The response is the artist report JSON, or `{"error":"…"}` with status 400, 429, or 500. The limit is 30 analyses per hour per client. 3. Unknown paths return HTTP 404. With `Accept: text/markdown`, the body is Markdown and links here and to the sitemap. 4. There is no write API. Human contact goes through https://identifygenre.com/contact and https://www.lukebyatt.com. ## Primary pages - [Home / Analyse tool](https://identifygenre.com/): Paste a Spotify URL to run a genre report - [How it works](https://identifygenre.com/how-it-works): Data sources and classification pipeline - [FAQ](https://identifygenre.com/faq): Common questions about the tool - [Blog](https://identifygenre.com/blog): Guides on genre research and music marketing - [About](https://identifygenre.com/about): Who operates Identify Genre and what it does - [Contact](https://identifygenre.com/contact): Product questions and privacy requests - [Privacy](https://identifygenre.com/privacy): Privacy policy ## Blog guides - [How to identify an artist's genre from a Spotify link](https://identifygenre.com/blog/identify-artist-genre-from-spotify-url) - [Spotify genres vs MusicBrainz vs Every Noise](https://identifygenre.com/blog/spotify-vs-musicbrainz-vs-every-noise) - [Genre targeting for music marketing](https://identifygenre.com/blog/genre-targeting-music-marketing) - [What genre is this artist?
