Genre targeting for music marketing and playlist pitching

Use genre classification, similar artists, and market signals to tighten ads targeting and playlist pitches — with a free Spotify URL workflow.

Genre is a targeting system

For music marketers, genre is not a trivia answer. It is a routing layer:

  • Which playlist curators to email
  • Which Meta / TikTok interest clusters to test
  • Which lookalike artists to cite in a one-pager
  • Which territories to prioritise for spend or touring support

If your brief still says only “indie / alternative,” you are leaving money and replies on the table.

Build a one-page targeting brief

Start with a Spotify artist URL in Identify Genre, then extract:

1. Primary + secondary genres — the language you lead with.

2. Similar artists — proof for playlist emails (“fits between X and Y”).

3. Ads targeting tab — interest / genre angles to test in paid social.

4. Playlist targets — shortlist of pitchable environments.

5. Geo / listenership — where affinity looks stronger (inferred markets, not Spotify’s private country charts).

Export PDF or CSV when you need to share the brief with a manager, label, or client.

Playlist pitching tips that follow from data

  • Lead with two lookalikes the curator already playlists, not a vague genre noun.
  • Match micro-genre language in the subject line when the datasheet supports it.
  • Keep the pitch short; attach or link the structured report if they want proof.

Ads targeting without guessing

Paid social interest graphs rarely match MusicBrainz ontology 1:1. Use:

  • Broad Spotify-style buckets for scale
  • Similar artists as creative and interest proxies
  • Genre clusters from the report to structure tests (A/B by cluster, not by vibes)

Avoid these traps

  • Targeting only the headliner genre when the act lives in a blend
  • Pitching “editorial” lists with language from a different lane
  • Ignoring geo signals when the act charts in a few markets

Workflow

1. Analyse the artist on Identify Genre.

2. Write the pitch / ads hypothesis from the datasheet.

3. Re-run after a campaign if positioning shifts.
