How to identify an artist's genre from a Spotify link

Paste a Spotify artist or track URL into Identify Genre to classify genres, map similar artists, and export a report — no login required.

The fastest workflow

If you have a Spotify link and need a clear genre answer, you do not need to open five databases by hand.

1. Copy the Spotify artist or track URL.

2. Open Identify Genre.

3. Paste the URL and click Analyse.

4. Read the genre cascade, similar artists, targeting, and markets — then export PDF or CSV if you need a shareable artefact.

That is the whole loop. No account. No API keys in the browser.

Why a Spotify URL is enough

Spotify URLs encode a stable artist or track ID. Identify Genre resolves that ID, pulls public identity fields, then runs a multi-source classification cascade so you are not stuck when one API is thin.

Typical sources in the pipeline:

  • Spotify — identity (name, images, links)
  • Last.fm — community tags, similar artists, listener signals
  • MusicBrainz — structured metadata cross-checks
  • Every Noise at Once — genre-space context

When Spotify Development Mode omits genres or popularity, enrichment layers still produce a usable datasheet. See how it works for the full methodology.

What “genre” means in a report

A good report does more than print one label. You should expect:

  • A primary genre plus supporting tags
  • Source badges so you know where a label came from
  • Similar artists for lookalike discovery
  • Ads / playlist / geo tabs so classification becomes action

If you only needed a dinner-table answer (“is this indie or pop?”), the primary tag is enough. If you are pitching playlists or building Meta/TikTok targeting, the rest of the datasheet matters more.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting a playlist URL — use an artist or track link instead.
  • Trusting a single platform tag without context — Spotify, Last.fm, and MusicBrainz often disagree; the cascade is the point.
  • Skipping similar artists — lookalikes often reveal the working genre for marketing even when the primary tag is broad (“pop”).
